About LightPainters.com
Why this site?
This site endeavors to be a comprehensive directory of things to do with light painting. This will cover
artists, groups, events, and links. Artists can be searched by geography and/or technique. Groups can be public, closed,
or private. Events can be paid, or free. Links are just useful, and can be user-submitted. Things can be marked as
favorites. Comments or ratings can be left on pretty much anything.
This site is neutral. We are not attempting to compete with any existing groups. Instead, we are trying to support them all.
The closest thing we're trying to compete with is Facebook. We are going to do a better image feed, and we have a lot
of features built into this site specifically for light painters, that Facebook will never have. We are also not endorsing
any light painting vendor over another. If you offer light painting gear for sale, talk to us about how you can get involved.
We are trying to pay for this site will affiliate programs, so that's appealing to us.
Recently a lot of the major services have started cracking down pretty hard on free speech. They're in a hard
spot with laws implemented in the USA. As people start to leave Facebook, and Tumblr, and the major photo services
start to change their terms and their prices, we saw a need for even more than being just a directory. Enter the image
and news feed... Facebook is great in a lot of ways. It's not great in that a light painting image ends up getting shared in 20 different
groups, and the comments are spread out, and the likes are spread out, and that one image shows up 20 times on your feed.
Picture sharing in the light painting community could be better, and we have tried to be better.
We are (soon) going to have a picture and news feed. Images will be shared in one spot. Images can be tagged with various attributes
(like the tools you used) or associations (groups etc). The news feed will be built to let you filter it to only show images
that were made with fiber optic. Or images that were made by individuals who are part of the LFLP group. Or images made
by artists that you marked as your favorite who used prisms and who live in the USA.
This is one news feed, one place for comments and likes on pictures, but many ways to sort and view the feed based on the criteria
that YOU want to use. So yes, in order to see this site get used and thrive it will essentially become the Facebook of light
painting, only built SPECIFICALLY for light painters.
Oh yeah, it's also probably going to be an app for iOS and Android.
